Luther Varsity in Southern Africa

A Place of Academic and Professional Excellence

Background

The Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa (LUCSA) through its 16-member churches in ten Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) member countries, observed the transition SADC was undergoing in socio-economic and political terms, recognizing the need for scaling up the provision of a contextualized education to support this evolution.

LUCSA felt itself bound by its long history of involvement in education in Southern Africa, from pre-primary level to Matric, its deep roots in the communities most affected by the shortage of educational facilities and the growing problem of unemployment to make a commitment to the future and to the betterment of education and training in the SADC.

To this end LUCSA proposed the creation of the Luther Varsity in Southern Africa (LUSA), which would be operated by a non-profit company. In this vision, LUSA would be a valuebased, comprehensive institution that will combine learning, applied research, innovation, and community development to produce graduates who will be equipped with industryrelevant, academic, and professional qualifications.

In 2014, LUSA was registered as a legal entity and in 2016 it opened its doors to its first cohort of students at its Kempton Park campus. As a new educational institution, it is still in the preparatory stages of seeking accreditation and registration for Higher Education programmes, but it is currently accredited with 5 (five) Sectoral Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), providing a rich variety of Occupational Qualifications and Courses.
